- Abstract
-
Amy Arrowsmith is a mother of four children and works with an independent girls school in Chattanooga, TN. In this interview among many other things, she discusses the diversities in news sources including the rise of social media. The interview focuses mainly on how these differences and changes in how news is received across generations affects major events such as the Black Lives Matter movement. In a brief section the blackout Wednesday was discussed and how organizations and individuals felt obliged to participate. We also talked about how other movements and events that occurred simultaneously to the Black Lives Matter movement played a part in the story. The main two out of those were the rise of cancel culture and COVID-19. Growing up in a small town in Alabama and spending basically her whole life in the American south, she explains the changes that she has seen culturally throughout her life. These details included a shift towards a more accepting environment. Another key aspect of this interview was the discussion over biased media and how that differs across various generations and demographics. The interview was conducted as a part of the Sewanee Black Lives Matter Oral History Project and will be found on the website.
