- Abstract
- Kaila Seger was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 2003 and is currently a student at Sewanee: The University of the South. The interview starts with discussions of Kaila’s life in Nashville and how she found community growing up, either through her school or softball team. She discussed how social media has not influenced her opinions of the Black Lives Matter Movement, but she uses TikTok to receive some information on the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict but takes what she receives on the app with a grain of salt. The main reason behind her not being influenced by social media when it comes to the Black Lives Matter Movement is because she did not have social media at the time. She speaks to the positives that have occurred from the movement, including giving the younger generation new voices. She has learned many new things about herself and society since the start of the movement, by doing her due diligence by bettering herself to become an ally to those who need it and not going down the rabbit hole by doing some things that could lead to a negative outcome. Her hope is that she can avoid hate, and that in the future everyone can avoid hate She wants to use her white privilege to give other people a platform. Kaila’s hope for the future of the movement is for everyone to understand why the movement is needed, why people are speaking out for themselves, and why “defund the police” is a statement.
