    Dr. Marty Casey grew up in towns across St. Louis, Missouri, mainly the Pinrose Park area and late Webster Groves. Later in her life Dr. Casey was influenced to start the Human Arts Foundation and later the UnGunn Institute as a result of her experiences in St. Louis. She was selected as one of the top 25 most influential business women in St. Louis in 2020. Dr. Casey also has co-created the global observance of Black SON Day. The inaugural event took place August 9, 2020 with more than 100 global networks, focused on uplifting the black community.

    Nolan Griggs is a 19 year old from Brentwood, TN. As Nolan states in the interview, Brentwood is a wealthy and rather conservative suburb of Nashville. Nolan is currently a full time student enrolled at Sewanee: The University of the South. He is a member of the golf team as well as Sigma Nu Fraternity. Nolan is very passionate about school and golf, so he spends most of his days working on these activities. Additionally, Nolan enjoys keeping up with the news and politics. He believes that following world news and our country's politics is a key factor in better understanding the world we live in.

    Oral History Interview of Ray Pohlman

    The interview was conducted over the phone. Lawson was at his house in Sewanee, TN and Ray was at his lake house in Counce, TN. He had his daughter Carrie and her husband David up for the weekend with his wife Anita. Upon finding a quiet spot in the house and after some technical difficulties involving Zoom, the interview commenced. The interview begins with Ray describing how he came to Memphis and what he saw when he arrived. Ray was very open to talk about the topic, especially since he could recall his time as a teenager during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. Much of the interview focused on the comparison between the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Lives Matter Movement.

    Doug Seiters is a retired Professor Emeritus of Classical Languages from The University of the South. Mr. Seiters was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1943. He grew up and attended school in Chattanooga, then attended Sewanee: The University of the South for his undergraduate education. There, he received his Bachelor of Arts. Along with this, he was the Chair of the College for his graduating class. After this, he attended Florida State University and received his Master of Arts degree. He then moved back to Sewanee, Tennessee, where he taught at the University of the South. During his time teaching, Mr. Seiters hosted and co-operated the Sewanee Summer Scholars program. This was a program designed by the school to bring in underprivileged students of color and provide them with the opportunity to achieve higher education. Mr. Seiters is now retired, living with his wife right in the heart of the Sewanee campus.

He then moved back to Sewanee, Tennessee, where he taught at the University of the South. During his time teaching, Mr. Seiters hosted and co-operated the Sewanee Summer Scholars program. This was a program designed by the school to bring in underprivileged students of color and provide them with the opportunity to achieve higher education. Mr. Seiters is now retired, living with his wife right in the heart of the Sewanee campus.

    Stormy Stewart is a senior English and Creative Writing double major at Sewanee: The University of the South. She was born November 30th, 2001 in Portsmouth, VA. Stormy has lived in several states throughout her life as her father was in the military. She has lived in Virginia, Connecticut, Maryland, Alabama, and D.C. She plans to continue her education in New Mexico after graduation. She has lived through the Black Lives Matter movement and has seen its effects through social media and the news. Stormy worked to spread information for the BLM movement to help get her community better informed.

    Oral History Interview of Everette Stutts

    Stutts Everette is a freshman at Sewanee: The University of the South from Mountain brook, Alabama. Stutts is a member of the men’s lacrosse team which is how he met the interviewer. He spent his entire childhood in Alabama in a predominantly white neighborhood with a fairly sheltered upbringing. Stutts has an extremely supportive and involved family. Stutts also grew up immersed in sports and sports culture, receiving much of his news about race relations and the black lives matter movement through the sports figures he looked up to and idolized. Stutts knew fairly early in his high school career that he wanted to stay in the south for college and immediately became interested in Sewanee. He committed to Sewanee his junior year and ever since has been a passionate tiger and has loved his Sewanee experience.

    Oral History Interview with Ben Williams

    He now teaches the subjects of US Government, AP Government, and DC History. Benjamin Williams was born on August 11, 1988, in Cleveland, Ohio. He is currently a teacher at Capital City Public Charter School in Washington, DC, and an elected member of the DC State Board of Education representing Ward One. Before moving to Washington, DC, he resided in Columbus, Ohio, Detroit, and Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ben holds a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Ohio State University. While at Ohio State, he started to get involved in social justice work. Ben also holds a Master's in Educational Studies from The University of Michigan, focusing on teaching secondary social studies. He later moved to DC to start his teaching career. His recent work has been with multiple nonprofit organizations in the DC area, including EmpowerEd, Teaching for Change, and the Zinn Education Project. He has led voter outreach campaigns in Ohio and campaigns to help people getting out of prison restore their voting rights.
